Air Conditioning
If your air conditioning isn’t blowing as cold as it used to, it’s usually down to low refrigerant levels, and a re-gas is often all that’s needed to get it working properly again.
At Audi VW Centre, we service, re-gas and repair air conditioning systems across all makes and models, using both R134a and R1234yf refrigerant gases.
A number of symptoms can point to an air conditioning issue, including:
Air conditioning systems naturally lose a small amount of refrigerant gas each year, even without a fault, which is why performance can gradually drop off. If left unchecked, low refrigerant levels can also mean the compressor isn’t being lubricated properly, leading to more serious and costly damage.
Older vehicles typically use R134a refrigerant, while most vehicles manufactured from around 2017 onwards use R1234yf, a gas designed to have a lower environmental impact. Using the correct gas for your vehicle is essential, as the two aren’t interchangeable and require different equipment to handle safely.
We’re equipped to work with both systems, so we can service and re-gas your air conditioning regardless of which type your vehicle uses.
We start by checking the system for leaks and testing current refrigerant levels. If a re-gas is needed, we remove the existing refrigerant, replace the system’s oil where required, and refill with the correct type and amount of gas for your vehicle. We also check the system is holding pressure correctly before handing your car back.
We’d recommend having your air conditioning checked every one to two years, even if it seems to be working well, since small losses in refrigerant can build up gradually and reduce cooling efficiency over time.
Our technicians are equipped to handle both refrigerant types safely and correctly, and we’ll always confirm which gas your vehicle uses before carrying out any work. We aim to identify the actual cause of reduced performance, rather than simply topping up gas without addressing a leak.
We carry out air conditioning servicing and repairs for drivers throughout Melksham, Bath, Swindon and the surrounding areas.
This depends largely on the age of your vehicle, with most cars from 2017 onwards using R1234yf and older models typically using R134a. We can confirm which gas your vehicle needs before carrying out any work.
A musty smell is often caused by bacteria or mould building up within the system, particularly around the evaporator. This can usually be resolved with a system clean alongside the standard service.
Most vehicles benefit from a re-gas every one to two years, as refrigerant levels naturally drop over time and having it checked regularly helps maintain cooling performance and can catch leaks early.
If you car’s refrigerant levels are low, we’ll usually recommend a full re-gas rather than a partial top-up, as this allows us to check for leaks and ensure the system is holding pressure correctly.
Audi VW Centre is a member of the IMI and the 1Tec Auto Hub network, giving you the reassurance of working with a garage that meets recognised industry standards and has access to the latest diagnostic technology and technical training.
